He is regarded by many as one of the greatest cyclists of all time. Of the thirteen Grand Tours which Hinault entered, he won 10; only Eddy Merckx has won more with 11.

Hinault won his first two Grand Tours in 1978, winning both the Vuelta a EspaƱa and the Tour de France. While he suffered a knee injury in 1980, he continued to race competitively and won the Tour de France again in 1981.
