After the Civil War, like many military officers of his time, Cushing continued his service on the western frontier. He became involved in the Indian Wars, a series of conflicts between the United States government and various Native American tribes as the nation expanded westward.

Cushing's most notable service during this period was in the Southwest, particularly in Arizona, where he fought against the Apache. He was known for his relentless pursuit of Apache bands that were resisting American expansion into their traditional lands.

In 1871, while leading a patrol in the Arizona Territory against the Apache, Cushing was ambushed and killed.
